What Is A Christian
The simple answer is... someone who has a personal relationship with Jesus, God's Son.
Such people are often referred to as "born again" or "saved". Now let's answer the question... What does someone need to do, to be saved'?
That is the most important question that can ever be asked! Read the following account from the Bible about a man who asked Jesus that very question.
In the gospel of Luke chapter 18, verses 18-25 a rich young ruler asked Jesus, "Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus answered, "Why do you call me good? No one is good--except God alone." Then Jesus asked him if he knew God's commandments... 'Do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal' and so on. To which the man replied, "All these I have kept since I was a boy." No lack of confidence here in this man's self-evaluation, is there? When Jesus heard this, he looked into the man's heart and saw his biggest area of need. He said to him, "You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was a man of great wealth. Jesus looked at him as he walked away and said, "How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God! "
This is a sad story. A wealthy young man comes to Jesus to find out how to live forever, to be saved from death, but he went away without it. He wouldn't take Jesus on Jesus' terms, he wanted Salvation on his own terms. We can only hope that he later had a change of heart. However in this brief interaction with Jesus we can learn how anyone can be saved.
Step #1: Come to Jesus, as an act of faith. Even though we can't see Him He is very near us.
Jesus is God's only Son, the only route to God the Father. He implied that the man could be saved if he kept all God's commandments. This indeed is true. If any one of us could manage to keep all of God's holy commandments perfectly, we could find eternal life on that basis. But we can't! That's why we need Jesus, someone who loves us enough to die for our sins and failures. Jesus was giving the young man an opportunity to humble himself and accept Jesus' help to become everything he should be. No amount of money, no good deeds, no status in society, no education can give, buy or earn us eternal life.
Step #2: Be willing to humbly admit that we are sinners, in
need of what only God's Son can give.
We have all failed if perfection is God's standard - which it is. God's
First Commandment is to put God first, totally, always. Who hasn't
failed that one, without looking at the other 9? Jesus identified the
biggest thing in this man's life. Sell everything you
have and give the proceeds to the poor, was Jesus' challenge. This man
could not do that, maybe something less challenging he could have done,
but money was most the important thing in his life. It is not a
requirement for everyone to sell everything and give the money to the
poor. But putting God first, is the same for everyone. If we fail
at that, we fail God's standards and need a Savior. Jesus comes into our
lives as our Savior and Lord or He doesn't come in. He isn't prepared to
play the role of an optional extra.
Step #3: Do what Jesus asks us to do. You'll feel His prompting as words in your mind or your heart.
Christians call that, making Jesus the Lord of your life. Faith is active, not passive. It involves beginning a personal relationship where we listen to and obey what He says. Our prayer must be "Jesus become Lord of my life, take charge, I surrender everything I am and I have to you."
Jesus said that because God loved the whole world so much, he gave his one and only Son, Jesus, so that whoever puts their trust in Him would not die and be lost eternally but would receive eternal life. (You can read this in the Bible, in John 3:16.)
If you believe this. Say the prayer underlined above and then find a church to attend where other Christians believe the Bible and are keen to live every day as followers of Jesus.
